The copper plate has the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.'
It is similar in size and stamp to several earlier plates, particularly those for The Doorway 193 and The Two Doorways 221, which date from 1880, but not to later plates.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). It was cleaned and cancelled with a diagonal line across the lower left corner at her request in 1931 by Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956), who commented 'aparently unfinished - Etched plate - Not printed - plate cleaned & varnished - I cant make much out of the plate I have never seen a proof - '. 4 Miss Philip gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
