The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to several plates including Rag Shop 380, and The Steps, Amsterdam 452.
It was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). The plate was in good condition and she authorised Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956) to print proofs. 9 The plate was then cancelled with a diagonal line across the lower left corner. She gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
