PUBLICATION

Château de Bridoré was never published. However, it is related to Whistler's unpublished 'Renaissance Set'.

EXHIBITIONS

Château de Bridoré was very rare indeed and rarely exhibited. An impression was lent by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) to the exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900 (). 10

After Whistler's death an impression - probably the same one - was exhibited at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904 and at the Whistler Memorial Exhibition in London in 1905. 11

10: Chicago 1900 (cat. no. 259).

11: New York 1904a (cat. no. 364); London Mem. 1905 (cat. no. 327).

SALES & COLLECTORS

On 25 January 1889 Walter Dowdeswell (1858-1929) told Whistler that 'my client in the country' had returned several etchings including 'Chateau Bridorez 6 - 6 - 0'. 12 He offered to return it to Whistler, and it may have been the same impression that Whistler sold to the Fine Art Society, London, on 27 March for £6.6.0. 13 This was bought by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), and is the sole known impression of the etching ().

12: GUW #00912.

13: '(8) Chateau Bridorez', Whistler to E.G. Brown, GUW #13000.
