Recto, above; verso, below:
The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' Whistler etched a lot of plates of the same size, mostly from the same maker, including London scenes (such as Nut Shop, St James's Place, Houndsditch 356,
Melon Shop, Houndsditch 355) and Queen Victoria's Jubilee subjects (i.e. The Turret Ship 305), most of which date from 1887. Also in the same size are views done in the Loire valley in 1888 and in subsequent years in Amsterdam and Paris (i.e.
Greengrocer's Shop, Paris 471).
The copper plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower left corner.
