The copper plate has no maker's mark. It is close in size to a number of plates dating from 1887 and 1888, most of which were made by Hughes & Kimber, including Model Stooping 362,
Baby Pettigrew 374,
Resting by the Stove 372 and Three studies of women's heads 400.
It was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line from the middle of the left edge to just above the bottom right corner.
