The composition is complete; there are many dots and flecks of foul biting at the centre.

Drypoint lines are added at the horizon.
State 3
Many dots of foul biting at centre are worn away or removed; light drypoint shading is added on and around the larger ships at left and right; pale left to right diagonals are added to the sky at centre, just above the horizon; outlines of clouds and slight left to right diagonal shading is added at upper centre.
State 4
Additional drypoint lines are added to the stern of the foremost ship on the left.
