The copper plate of Rag Shop, St Martin's Lane has no maker's stamp. It is the same size as The Bucking Horse, Wild West 295 and Petite Rue des Bouchers 342, both dating from the autumn of 1887.
It was in Whistler's studio at his death, and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the left side of the plate.
