EXHIBITIONS

Dieppe was first shown among a group of forty etchings by Hogarth & Son in London in 1887. 8 One art critic wrote approvingly of this 'tiny plate' and other recent etchings of Chelsea shops. 9

Impressions were shown by H. Wunderlich & Co., New York in 1898 and 1903. Both Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) and Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) lent impressions to the exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900: () and (). 10

After Whistler's death, impressions were shown at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904 and the Whistler Memorial Exhibition in London in 1905. 11

SALES & COLLECTORS

Whistler sold an impression on 18 April 1893 to the Fine Art Society, London art dealers, for £2.2.0. 12 He also sold impressions in 1897 and in 1900 to H. Wunderlich & Co. of New York for £3.3.0. 13 One of these probably went to Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) () and another possibly to Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) (). These went eventually to the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC (the latter a gift of Lessing Julius Rosenwald (1891-1971)).

Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought an impression from Obach & Co., London, in December 1903 (). One impression owned by Ralph Harmon Booth (1873-1931) was acquired by Henry Harper Benedict (1844-1935) and bought eventually by the Library of Congress (). Another was given by Atherton Curtis (1863-1944) to the Cabinet des estampes, Bibliothèque nationale de France in 1943 ().
