STATE
Five states are known before cancellation.
State 1
Signed with a butterfly at upper right, on the beam of the arcade.
The composition is complete.
The top of the arcade at upper left is largely unshaded.
State 2
Additions in drypoint include strong shading above the pillar and on the balusters at upper left, and at the top and bottom left of the pillar; short lines are added to the two groups of figures in the foreground to the right of the pillar.
State 3
Horizontal drypoint shading is added under the arcade.
State 4
More patches of shading are added under the arcade, crossing and augmenting earlier shading; the balusters are shaded more fully with short horizontal lines; the outside line of the supporting buttress above the pillar is indicated; short lines extend shadows on the sides of the pillar; the figures in the foreground have additional details including an umbrella held by a man to right of the pillar, a hat on one woman and fuller skirt on another; the woman with a child, in the centre, to left of the hansom cab, appears to have a dark jacket with rounded collar (possibly fur).
State 5
The drypoint additions have faded or been reduced above the pillar; the ghostly figure to left of the woman with a child has been removed, as have the faint figures behind the two women in the foreground.
State 6
The pillar has been shortened and the figures to left have been removed, as has the group of women in the foreground at right.
State 7
A little girl is walking between the lady and the running boy in the centre.
State 7 (cancelled)
Cancelled with one diagonal line.
