Two states are known before cancellation, which occurred in three stages.
State 1
There is no signature or inscription.
Published in this and the next state by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with the Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886.
State 2
Signed with a butterfly at lower left.
With a few short slanting drypoint lines to left of the head of the young man at right.
The butterfly signature and shading behind the young man's head are faint on some impressions.
Published in the Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886.
State 2 (cancelled a)
Cancelled with a right to left diagonal line (/) below the skirt of the woman by the well, a faint diagonal between the two groups of turkeys and a faint left to right diagonal between the two windows at upper left.
State 2 (cancelled b)
Further cancelled with two left to right diagonals (\\) across and below the well-head and another faint diagonal between the two windows at upper left.
State 2 (cancelled c)
More emphatically cancelled with crossed diagonal lines.
