The copper plate has no maker's mark on the verso, and is not the same size as any other plate. It was probably made for Whistler in Venice. 7

It was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with the Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886.
The plate was cancelled in three stages with diagonal and crossed diagonal lines. The plate, as well as an impression from the cancelled plate (), was acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago. 8
