Pickle Herring Wharf dates from 1876 or 1877. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date.
Some impressions appear to have been printed in 1877. Whistler, in an invoice to Messrs Hogarth, listed this etching with a date, possibly that of printing: 'Pickle herring Stairs - (Oct. 12 -) No. 5'. 1
1: 22-27 October [1877], #12737.
