STATE
Four states are known before cancellation.
State 1
Signed with a butterfly at left, just above centre.
The composition is complete.
State 2
Additions include light horizontal lines above the bridge at left; horizontal shading on the embankment below the trees, on the side of the large house to left of the centre mast and on the chimney at right, and both horizontal and diagonal shading on the roofs between the masts; a dark doorway on the second house to left of the right mast; new outlines on the masts and short lines shading the masts and the furled sails; stays on the mast at right; and reflections at lower right.
State 3
Diagonal lines cover blank spaces on the trees; the lines on the doorway of the second house from the right have worn or been rubbed down.
State 4
Shading is added around the windows on the second house from the right.
In late impressions the drypoint has faded and become uneven.
State 4 (cancelled)
Cancelled with crossed diagonal lines across the image.
