SALES & COLLECTORS
Charles Augustus Howell (1840?-1890) bought an impression of 'Temple Bar' from Whistler on 24 November 1877. 16 The artist sold 'thirteen more beautiful proofs', including one impression of 'Temple Bar' for £1.1.0 to Alfred Chapman (1839-1917) in the following year. 17
At some time, probably in the early 1880s, Mortimer Luddington Menpes (1860-1938) acquired proofs of the first three states, and these were bought through Obach & Co. in 1905 by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) (, , ) who bequeathed them to the Freer Gallery of Art. Henry Harper Benedict (1844-1935) owned an impression, which was bought later by Lessing Julius Rosenwald (1891-1971), who gave it to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (). The only impression outside Washington is in the University of Glasgow (); its provenance is unknown until it was bought from P. & D. Colnaghi in 1970.
