TECHNIQUE
This is an unfinished etching.
PRINTING
The only known impression of A Sketch of Shipping before cancellation was printed in black ink on Asian laid paper ().
The etching was published in an album of Cancelled Plates ('Cancelled Set') by The Fine Art Society, London, 1879 in an edition of about 20 or 24. Impressions from the cancelled plate were mainly printed in black ink on cream or ivory laid paper. Papers included cream wove (); ivory wove (); off-white laid with Strasbourg Lily watermark (); cream laid with the Strasbourg Lily/WGL watermark (). Four different cancelled etchings, including this, were printed on the same sheet of ivory laid Van Gelder paper (, , , ).
