The Little Forge, Liverpool probably dates from 1875, when Whistler visited Speke and Liverpool. Whistler etched Shipbuilder's Yard, Liverpool 142 on the same visit.
One impression is dated '75' in an unknown hand, but possibly with information from the artist (). The drypoint was probably completed and signed in 1879 (i.e. ) before being exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery .
