STATE

Seven states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Etching: K0950101
There is no signature or inscription.
The river is empty, except for a sailboat at far right near the bridge; there is a blank space above the barge at extreme left; there is prominent foul biting at lower right.

State 2

Etching: K0950302
Additions in drypoint include a sailing boat in the water at right, and its reflections; a roof in front of the buildings to left of the tower, trees behind it, and shading on the buildings; new lines on the sky at left and top, including several slightly curving lines at upper right; strong outlines defining the shape of the barges and the furled sail at left; diagonal shading and cross-hatching on the barge hulls; and a few near-horizontal lines to left of the boat on the shore in the foreground.

State 3

Etching: K0950301
Light drypoint lines are added to the reflections of the boat at lower right.

State 4

Etching: K0950201
The sailing boat and reflections, and the reflections of the bridge, are removed; some shading on the water, beach and buildings at left, has been rubbed down; the foul biting at lower right has been mostly removed.
In the impression reproduced there are extensive crayon additions including a tree at lower right and shading on the buildings and barges.

State 5

Etching: K0950507
On the river, at the right, is a small barge with a white sail, reflected in the water; vertical and slanting lines are added on the hulls of the beached barges; the space above the barge at left is filled in; there is additional shading on the buildings; new lines are added on the water; the edge of the beach is defined, as is the water and reflections under the bridges; the foul biting has been reduced and some of it has become a flight of birds in the sky.

State 6

Etching: K0950502
More shading is added on the sail of the sailing barge, its yard is lengthened and its reflections extended with parallel vertical lines; the water in the middle distance is strengthened; reflections are added below a tree, to left of centre; several of the birds above the buildings have faded (or flown) away; additional lines emphasize the clouds; the corners of the plate appear to have been clipped and are less sharp.
In this and the subsequent state, published with the 'Thames Set'.

State 7

Etching: K0950605
The hull and mast of the sailing barge at right are outlined with strong drypoint lines, with the sail having a more wavy outline; light drypoint shading is added on the sail; the hull is shaded and the barge's reflection is extended with vertical lines; long slightly wavy horizontal lines are added in the sky plus slanting lines at the extreme right.
In this and the previous state, one of the 'Thames Set'.
Some impresssions, like that shown above, have corrosion marks. In other impressions, probably taken from the plate with the steel-facing removed, the plate is restored, as in the impression reproduced below.

Etching: K0950623

State 7 (cancelled)

Etching: K0950702
Cancelled with uneven lines (two horizontal, one vertical, and two diagonal).
