TECHNIQUE
This is pure etching.
PRINTING
Only three impressions of this rare etching have been located. All are trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler had printed them. Two of these were printed in dark brown ink on laid paper with a partial 'PRO PATRIA' watermark (the '1st proof',

). Whistler was partial to 'Pro Patria' paper, and at least 100 such sheets were used by him in the years from 1886 on.
