TECHNIQUE
The plate was executed in pure drypoint.
PRINTING
Few impressions of this drypoint have been located. The first proof was printed in black ink on cream wove paper (
) and the second state, also in black, on ivory laid paper (
). An impression of the third state was printed in brown ink with soft tone carefully wiped to suggest sky and water, on off-white laid paper. (
). Finally, two fourth state impressions were printed in dark brown ink on 'modern' (post-1800) laid paper (
) and black ink on ivory laid paper (
). Different ink colours and the use of plate tone resulted in subtly varied atrmospheric effects.
