The copper plate bears the maker's rectangular stamp: 'HUGHES AND KIMBER / MANUFACTURERS / RED LION PASSAGE / FLEET STREET / LONDON'. It is close in size to a number of other plates, mostly made by Hughes & Kimber, including figure subjects such as
Mrs Leyland, Sr. [123], Maud, Standing [169], and
Irving as Philip of Spain, No. 2 [159], and landscapes such as Speke Hall: The Avenue [101] and
Price's Candle Factory [166].
The cancelled copper plate was probably among plates bought at Whistler's bankruptcy sale by the Fine Art Society, London. It was published in an album of Cancelled Plates ('Cancelled Set') by The Fine Art Society, London, 1879.
The copper plate was probably among those acquired from Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851), by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), 'in exchange for a number of lithographic proofs'. 2 She gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
