SALES & COLLECTORS
It is likely that the etching was kept within the family, and not sold by Whistler. One impression, the second state, was owned by Francis Seymour Haden, Sr (1818-1910) and sold through H. Wunderlich & Co., with the help of Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851-1938), to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) (
). The first state, according to collection records, was owned by Haden's brother, and was eventually, in 1939, acquired by the Library of Congress (
