TECHNIQUE
It is pure etching. The figures were drawn with big gaps in the outlines, and shorter, abrupt, jerky lines, plus little patches of zigzag shading. The broader shadows are vigorous patches of zigzag, rarely overlapping, creating the effect of flickering light and shadow.
PRINTING
Only two impressions are known. One was printed in dark brown ink on fine ivory laid paper (
) and one in black, also on ivory laid paper (
), both printed with very light tone, trimmed to the platemark and signed on a tab with a butterfly but without the usual abbreviation 'imp.' indicating that Whistler had printed them - so perhaps he had not printed them but only signed them.
