TECHNIQUE
It is pure etching. It was drawn with short curved, bouncy, and jagged lines, plus more sinuous lines on the figures, and a very few patches of shading. There are a lot of flecks and traces of earlier work.
PRINTING
The Ramparts, Sandwich is very rare. Two impressions are in black ink, one on ivory laid paper (
) and one on an off-white, almost grey paper (
); another is in dark brown ink on a watermarked ivory laid paper (
). All were trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp' to show that Whistler printed them.
