The plate has no maker's stamp, but it was among the basic sizes provided by Hughes & Kimber (see for instance, Rochester Row, Westminster
[383] and Clothes-Exchange, Houndsditch. No. 2
[359]). It is of a size very popular with Whistler (another Chelsea subject of the same size is Merton Villa, Chelsea
[381]).
The copper plate remained in Whistler's estate and was given to the University of Glasgow by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower right corner.
