The Tow-Path probably dates from 1887. It appears to be late spring or summer, with trees in full leaf. Whistler recorded printing several impressions in August 1887. 1
The copper plate is unusually small, and is close in size to several plates including two landscapes, Dieppe [251] and Little Chelsea (Memorial) [315], which are dated 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date, and 'The Tow-Path' was first listed by Whistler either late in 1887 or early 1888. 2
