The copper plate has no maker's mark. It is different in size from any other plate of the period, though close to a later plate, The Embroidered Curtain
[451]. It is distinguished by a pebbled surface on the verso, and would have been made for Whistler in Venice. 11

It was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. The plate was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower left corner.
