Little Smithfield probably dates from 1875.
The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' This form of the stamp was used mainly between 1873 and 1875 (see for instance Shipbuilder's Yard, Liverpool [142]).
In subject and composition it can be compared to certain earlier etchings such as Stevens' Boat Yard [56] and later etchings such as Wych Street, London [176].
