The copper plate is different in size from any other plate. The plate was probably in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). Alternatively, it may have been sold at the time of Whistler's bankruptcy in 1879 and retrieved by Miss Philip from the Fine Art Society or Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851). Miss Philip gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line from the top, to right of centre, to the bottom near the right corner, and protected with a coat of lacquer.
