In 1861 Whistler was asked to illustrate two poems in Passages from Modern English Poets. Whistler wrote to Arthur James Lewis (1824-1901):
'Can't find anything among my old plates that will do for your work - but will at once begin, and finish two small etchings as I promised'. 12
12: Whistler to A. J. Lewis, [November 1861?], GUW #02138.
The copper plate has not been located. The plate was exactly the same size as the other 'small etching', The Punt
[82]. Kennedy mentioned that 'On this plate there is a bevel of about one eighth of an inch all around.' 13
13: Kennedy 1910 (cat. no. 86).
