STATE
Two states are known.
State 1
Signed 'Whistler -' at lower right.
The woman's nose is straight, and the pillow on the right has a prominent zigzag pattern.
State 2
The face has been redrawn and the woman is looking more to her right, away from the viewer; drypoint shading is added on the face, which is lit more strongly from upper right; her nose is retroussé; her hair falls lower over the forehead and spreads in curls over the pillow; she has a dark frilly trim on her collar or sleeve; the folds are extended at upper right on the curtain; the pillow on the right is enlarged, and is white; the pillow behind her head is darkened; a small area with shaded patches is on the lower right side of the bed.
