Liverdun was drawn during Whistler's etching tour of the Rhineland between 14 August and 7 October 1858. It dates from early in the trip, possibly in the second half of August. Other scenes etched on this trip include The Unsafe Tenement [18] and Street at Saverne [14].
Liverdun was published in Douze eaux-fortes d'après Nature (Twelve Etchings from Nature, the 'French Set') in November 1858.
