Two states are known.
State 1
Signed and inscribed 'Whistler. 1859.' at lower left.
There is only one horse; there are two men on the path in the distance at right.
State 2
A second horse and heavy clouds are added; the contour of the trees is altered; the tall trees at left and right are bigger, the one at upper right covering up one of the men on the path; more foliage, grass and texture are added to the landscape in drypoint.
