STATE
Three states are known.
State 1
Signed 'J Whistler' (,
) at lower left, although 'histler' is largely obscured by the shading, to the left of the boy's leg:
There are burnished areas at upper left and right, scraper marks at upper right, and a series of 'test' marks in the upper right corner.
State 2
There is a roughly horizontal line across the boy's jacket and left sleeve.
State 3
Horizontal lines are added in the shading at right; there are several long roughly vertical scratches near the left edge; scraper marks at upper right have been removed.
